Casting a circle is an important ritual in many forms of witchcraft and paganism, and it involves creating a sacred space in which to perform spells and other magical workings. Here are the steps for casting a circle:
- Cleanse and prepare the space where you will be casting the circle. This can involve sweeping the area with a besom (a witch's broom), smudging with incense or a smudge stick, and placing candles or other decorations around the perimeter of the space.
- Ground and center yourself. Take a few deep breaths and focus on the present moment. You can also visualize roots growing from the soles of your feet and grounding you to the earth.
- Cast the circle. Starting at the east, use a wand, athame (a ritual knife), or your finger to draw a circle around the perimeter of the space. As you draw the circle, visualize a wall of white light or energy surrounding the space and protecting it from outside influences.
- Invoke the elements. Once the circle is cast, call upon the elements of earth, air, fire, and water to guard and protect the circle. You can do this by lighting candles or incense, or by using other symbols or objects that represent the elements.
- Perform your magical workings. Once the circle is cast and the elements are invoked, you can begin your spells and other magical workings. Remember to stay focused and remain within the circle until your workings are complete.
- Close the circle. When your magical workings are finished, thank the elements for their presence and protection, and then close the circle by walking around the perimeter of the space and visualizing the circle dissolving. Take a few moments to ground and center yourself, and then the circle is closed
